Azienda Elettrica Ticinese ensures a future-proof power supply with zenon

Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET) modernized its control systems with COPA-DATA’s zenon platform. In cooperation with SATOMEC AG, the migration from SICAM® 230 to zenon Energy Edition was completed without downtime. The result: greater efficiency, higher resilience, and a future-proof power supply for the canton of Ticino.

Efficiency and security of supply in focus

Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET) is the cantonal energy provider of Ticino, operating hydropower plants, photovoltaic systems, and a high-voltage network. Together with COPA-DATA solution partner SATOMEC AG, AET migrated its control systems to the zenon Energy Edition software platform. The goal: increase efficiency in renewable energy production and strengthen long-term supply security.

Highlights

  • Migration from SICAM® 230 to zenon Energy Edition without downtime
  • Unified user interface and centralized control technology
  • Cost-efficient implementation by leveraging existing know-how
  • Seamless data continuity from legacy systems
  • Redundant control center for increased resilience
  • Future-proof solution through continuous software updates

From migration to standardization

The previously used SICAM® 230 software was discontinued by its supplier. Since it was based on the zenon platform, AET chose to migrate directly to the original product. This allowed the company to retain internal expertise and carry out most of the project with its own resources, supported by SATOMEC AG and COPA-DATA training sessions.

Smooth transition without service interruption

The project was developed on a separate system to enable thorough simulations and testing. Only after successful validation was the system switched to live operation – without interrupting the power supply. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, the entire project was carried out remotely.

Enhanced resilience and long-term reliability

The implementation of a second, redundant control center further increased AET’s operational reliability. Integrating historical process data, alarms, and logbooks ensured complete information continuity. The new control system is based on an open, scalable architecture compliant with IEC 62443 and benefits from continuous software improvements by COPA-DATA.

Conclusion

By migrating to zenon, AET now operates a modern, future-proof control system that combines efficiency, operational safety, and sustainability – ensuring a stable and resilient power supply for Ticino in the long term.
